Jade / Nephrite
For thousands of years artists and craftsmen
have prized the magical qualities of the rare mineral Jade.
From ancient European caves to the islands of the Pacific
ocean Jade was a treasured stone.
The stone has been long though to protect the kidney, heart,
larynx, liver, spleen, thymus, thyroid and strengthen the
body. It also adds longevity. Jade is known as a symbol of
love and virtue.
Nephrite is only one of two distinct minerals classed as
Jade. Owing to its fine-grained interlocking mesh of
needles, nephrite is the toughest known mineral.
|
This means that jade is
delicate yet tough at the same time – the qualities of a
real gentleman – the qualities which have led it to become
the most used, loved and valued carving material of all
time.
Cowell on Eyre Peninsula in South Australia has one of the
largest known deposits of nephrite jade in the world. Jade
varies in color from black to dark green, grayish-green to
pale green. Dark green jade is the most abundant and black
is the highest quality.
Cowell Jade is a stone of great beauty and strength. It has
been turned into exquisite carvings to delight our customers
